چکیده

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Colorado School of Mines and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has demonstrated the application of pulsed limestone bed (PLB) treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) at the Argo tunnel discharge near Idaho Springs, Colorado. Current technology for AMD treatment at the Argo facility is neutralization with lime. However, lime neutralization often results in large amounts of highly hydrated metal oxide sludge, leading to high disposal costs. Use of the PLB process as a pretreatment typically offers cost savings not only through lower reagent costs, but also through decreased sludge volume. In this study we compared the characteristics of sludges created using lime only to a sludge that was pretreated with the PLB, followed by lime treatment. Lime treatment was performed batchwise in a 60 gallon cone-bottom stirred tank where the pH was elevated to 10, and held for an hour. A sample of sludge from the operating treatment plant was also tested for comparison. The PLB/lime treatment was accomplished by first passing the water through the PLB system, followed by batch lime treatment to pH 10 as before. The sludge qualities were evaluated through settled sludge volume, filterability through a bench-scale filter press, and the moisture percentage in the filter cake. The PLB/lime treatment resulted in a decrease in sludge volume of 34% after 24 hours, with good filtration performance, and a final cake solids content of 22% versus 19% for the lime sludge. A decrease in lime consumption of 45% was also obtained with the PLB pretreatment. Additional

Process for Acidic Rock Drainage Treatment

The process using lignosulfonates for acidic rock drainage (ARD) treatment is referred to as the Lignor TM process. Lignosulfonates are waste by-products produced in the sulfite pulping process. The present study has shown lignosulfonates are able to protect lime from developing an external surface coating, and hence to favor its dissociation. Further, the addition of lignosulfonates to ARD sol...

The Effect of Neutralisation Method and Reagent on the Rate of Cu and Zn Release from Acid Rock Drainage Treatment Sludges

Neutralisation of Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) by adding an alkaline reagent produces sludges generally dominated by amorphous ferrihydrite, often with high levels of adsorbed heavy metals. The effect of neutralisation method and reagent on the long-term chemical stability of these treatment sludges was investigated experimentally using a relatively oxidised synthetic ARD (containing Fe[~70% Fe], A...

The Strategic Use of Liquid Lime in Sludge Treatment

Lime treatment of wastewater sludge has been in use for over a century. This paper describes the use of ‘Liquid Lime’ and hydrated lime suspensions as a sludge treatment process for the specific purpose of agricultural recycling. The introduction of ‘Liquid Lime’ treatment has enabled South West Water to achieve full compliance with the Sludge (Use in Agriculture) Regulations at a time when the...

CCB-based encapsulation of pyrite for remediation of acid mine drainage.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from abandoned coal mines continues to be one of the most significant environmental problems. Remediation of AMD requires an addition of lime source to decrease the acidity, and grouting the entire mine and encapsulating the pyrite by calcium-rich additives is often employed. Utilization of alkaline coal combustion by-products (CCBs) has gained acceptance in such remedi...

Chemical stability of acid rock drainage treatment sludge and implications for sludge management.

To assess the chemical stability of sludges generated by neutralizing acid rock drainage (ARD) with alkaline reagents, synthetic ARD was treated with hydrated lime (batch and high-density sludge process), limestone, and two proprietary reagents (KB-1 and Bauxsol). The amorphous metal hydroxide sludge produced was leached using deionized water, U.S. EPA methods (toxicity characteristic leaching ...
